GASPAR NOE ON THE SET OF HIS LATEST FILM "ENTER THE VOID"

— The shooting would have started in Tokyo (Japan) October 19, 2007 and would have stopped momentarily December 15, 2007 to resume in January/February 2008 at Toho studio. It would have continued to Canada in late April 2008 (flashbacks). Reshoot would have been done in Tokyo at the end of 2008.

— EXCLU LTDT : some sequences were shot in the district of Kabukicho (Shinjuku) and several nightclubs as well as external places.

— 18 november 2007 - a Japanese extra took pictures during the filming of a sequence set in a hospital and has published on his blog. A few hours later, the pictures were deleted...

"Un ami m'a appelé pour savoir si j'étais disponible pour être figurant dans le film de Gaspar Noé. Bien sûr que j'étais disponible ! Le principe était que les acteurs principaux discutaient entre eux pendant que les figurants dansaient dans une boite de nuit. La boite de nuit où nous tournions la scène était un très bel endroit et il y avait beaucoup d'étrangers et de japonais. Il y avait aussi des mannequins que j'avais déjà vu quelque part. Donc, Gaspar nous a demandé de danser, et nous avons dansé. J'ai aussi dansé avec une fille blonde. Nous avons dansé, dansé, dansé. La séquence était pleine d'alcool, de cigarettes, de musique et de lumières. Nous avons continué à danser et quand j'ai fini par atteindre mes propres limites, Gaspar a lancé :"Coupé !" Ouf ! Ça avait pris 2 ou 3 heures pour tourner cette seule séquence ! Je ne savais pas que ça prenait autant de temps ! Quelqu'un a alors dit que nous devions tourner encore 4 scènes de plus mais, malheureusement, j'avais quelque chose à faire et je suis parti."

"When I was waiting for someone in Shibuya, I met Gaspar Noe by chance.

Gaspar has been shooting his latest movie set in Tokyo since last year. He said he finished shooting the main part of the movie, and then went to Canada and Australia to shoot some other parts. And then, after taking vacation, he said he came to Japan again to collect materials to re-create "city".

Men with digital cameras were taking pictures from the roof of buildings. There was a tall French man who was giving technical directions, the same guy who worked for Wong Kar-wai's "2046", "Speed Racer" and many other famous Hollywood movies. Gaspar said : "This guy took the most beautiful picture in "2046" and that scene was the only part which was beautiful in the movie."
Then the guy said "It's fun to work with Wong because there is no direction."

Anyways, "re-creation" is the key. How is Gaspar's direction affecting the movie? I had a chance to see the footage of his movie last year, and it was totally beautiful and I have to say that I was kind of jealous about it. I'd love to see the finished look as soon as possible, but Gaspar said he is not sure if he can finish shooting the movie before the next Cannes Festival.

We went through narrow pathes in Kabuki-cho and went up stairs. Cockroaches were running at our feet and there were rats too. A guy who just came out from a "buru-sera" shop looked us strangely while we were getting on our bus. At that time, the song on the car radio was "歌舞伎町レポート"."

Exclu LTDT : nous vous proposons de lire le témoignage d'une personne (ayant souhaité rester anonyme) qui a vu en exclusivité, lors du Festival de Cannes 2008, les tous premiers teasers du nouveau film de Gaspar Noé, Enter the Void. En bonus exclusif : le dossier de presse cannois.

"Festival de Cannes 2008. Je vois sur le site « letempsdetruittout.net » qu’un teaser de Enter The Void serait visible à Cannes. Vu que j’y vais, je décide de mener l’enquête. Sur place, je tombe sur une brochure éditée par Wild Bunch, le diffuseur international du prochain Gaspar Noé, en couverture l’affiche du film. Maintenant que je sais qui voir, je me lance à leur recherche dans le Marché du Film. Après quelques tours dans le Marché, pas de stand Wild Bunch... Je vais donc demander à l’accueil : « Ah non, ils n’ont pas de stand, ils sont dans un appartement en face du Palais ». Banco ! Je pars chercher cet appart'. Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas, à cette période-là, tous les grands appartements de la Croisette sont loués par les boîtes de prods, distributeurs et autres. Et des banderoles de pub sont installées sur les balcons (soit des affiches de films ou alors juste le nom de la prod). Ça ressemble un peu à un Las Vegas du cinéma. Après avoir cherché, je trouve une petite banderole Wild Bunch où il est inscrit dessus « Gaspar Noé : Enter The Void ».  La Terre Promise est là ! Je traverse et entre dans l’immeuble. Vais-je me faire refouler ? Je grimpe les étages, au premier il y a l’appart’ Gaumont avec l’affiche du prochain Lucky Luke (Jean Dujardin et James Hutt sont de retour...), au second une jolie pancarte Wild Bunch annonce l’entrée et visiblement je suis pas le seul. L’appart’ est plein de gens.  « Bonjour, je voulais savoir si je peux voir des images de Enter The Void ». L’hôtesse me dit « Oui, pas de problème »... Elle se dirige vers un gros écran plasma, vide le lecteur DVD et met un DVD Wild Bunch dedans avec toutes les bandes annonces du catalogue 2008/2009. Et là... 5 teasers se présentent à moi.  L’hôtesse me les diffuse un à un ; je n’entends rien car il y a beaucoup de monde autour qui parle. Mais les images me scotchent un peu surtout grâce à leurs capacités techniques. Cela dit je reste légèrement déçu car ca sent fort une resucée d’Irréversible et de ce qu’il a fait depuis, mais en mille fois plus impressionnant !!! Donc ca va. Les teasers ont la même forme que ceux sortis pour Irréversible : Le titre, des stroboscopes, une courte séquence, le nom de Noé et la période de sortie... Summer 2009."

A la sortie d'Irréversible, dans une interview donnée à France Inter (cf. rubrique TÉLÉCHARGEMENTS), Noé évoque de nouveau Soudain le vide en ces termes : un scénario surécrit de 120 pages, très visuel et avec très très peu de dialogues, une dizaine de répliques maximum...

"Les questions tournent principalement autour de ses débuts et de son prochain film : « Il se pourrait que ce film ne se fasse pas…Quand je lui ai demandé si [Soudain le vide] était son prochain projet, il m’a dit qu’il n’en était même plus certain. Teaser d'Enter the Void 2 : Linda (Paz de la Huerta) cours dans la rue, de nuit. La caméra est dans les airs et fonce à toute allure au dessus d'elle. Le plan est stupéfiant.

Teaser d'Enter the Void 3 : Oscar entre dans une boite de nuit. Il est de dos, en total contre jour, la scène étant éclairée entièrement par des stroboscopes rouge, vert et violet. Tout le reste est absolument noir, comme sur l'affiche.

Teaser d'Enter the Void 4 : Dans une voiture, face à l'entrée de la boite de nuit éclairée, le soir.

Chaque teaser (sauf le premier) utilisent plus ou moins le style de police "néon" de l'affiche.

"L’hôtesse repart, je vois une pile de DVD Wild Bunch comme celui mis dans le lecteur DVD, je me dis : « J’en prends un ou pas ? » et puis mon éducation me dis de ne pas le faire. Par contre je trouve une pile de dossiers de presse et là, aucune hésitation, je les prends.

Je retrouve l’hôtesse, je lui demande si je peux prendre un DVD : elle répond d’un non formellement négatif ! Mais elle me donne sa carte me disant de la rappeler dès le mois de juin pour en reparler. Je la remercie et pense à l’appeler dès que Juin apparaitra sur mon calendrier.

Quelques jours plus tard, de retour chez moi, je me lance sur After Effect et essaye de restituer le teaser 1 à partir de la photo qui circule sur le net.

Je dois reprendre contact avec le vendeur du film dans quelques temps, puis avec l’hôtesse, et j’essaye de comprendre le mystère Chabrier* en même temps. Une moustache me pousse et je deviens Mike Hammer !"

STORY-LINE AND COMMENTS
Storyline: ENTER THE VOID is a film that adopts the subjective point of view of the main character, Oscar, through a series of events preceding and following his death.

This film is inspired in part by the accounts of people who have had near death experiences and part by the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

The setting is Tokyo Japan therefore adding emphasise on the fragility of orphaned brother and sister's relationship by propelling them in a different part of the word. A world filled with fluorescent colours, neons, technology, distortion and chaos.

This is a melodrama: The universal one of a young man who, after the brutal death of his parents, promises that he will protect his sister no matter what, and sensing that he himself is dying, fights desperately to keep his promise. A film where the life of one person's is linked to the love which he has for another human being.

During a drug deal, our hero Oscar is set-up and betrayed by his envious friend Victor to the Police. Oscar tries to escape by running and hiding in the men's washroom of a bar where he is shot by the Japanese Police. Through the last moments of his life we see him leave his body and oversee all of the action happening simultaneously in the lives of his beloved sister Linda and his friends.
We see Oscar's life in his normal state of awareness and in his altered states: The state of alertness, the uninterrupted through procedure, memories, dreams, flashbacks, visions, hallucinations and mindsets.
A film where love, family, tragedy, drama, drugs, sex, death and reincarnation, all co-exist.

Comments:
A fascinating, dramatic and complex story produced, written and directed by Gaspar No. It is a very visual film and will demand very strong performances to convey the complex emotions and state of mind of our characters. We are casting these roles for the shoot in Montreal. Roles are Canadian and non-union members.
